Trump endorses in New York governor race the day after Stefanik drops out

21 December 2025 at 06:35

President Donald Trump endorsed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in the New York gubernatorial race, a day after Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) ended her bid.

“Bruce is MAGA all the way, and has been with me from the very beginning,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social Saturday. “Bruce Blakeman is a FANTASTIC guy, will win the big November Election and, without hesitation, has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Governor of the ONCE GREAT STATE OF NEW YORK (IT CAN BE GREAT AGAIN!). BRUCE BLAKEMAN WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Stefanik was long seen as the favorite in the Republican primary to face off against incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2026, months after Trump nudged fellow governor hopeful Rep. Mike Lawler into running for reelection to his competitive House seat by endorsing him to remain in Congress.

But Blakeman jumping into the race earlier this month complicated things for Stefanik, and Trump had publicly praised both Republicans as “fantastic people.”

Hochul still holds a double-digit lead over Blakeman in a potential head-to-head matchup, according to a Siena Poll of New York released earlier this week.

Stefanik, a once powerful voice inside Congress, has had a tumultuous year, as the president pulled her nomination to be ambassador to the United Nations over concerns about what her departure would mean for the slim GOP House majority.

But Trump also declined to endorse the Upstate New York congressmember for governor. In her announcement bowing out of the race, she said she would not run for reelection.

Blakeman attended a Hanukkah reception at the White House with the president earlier this week.

In a post on X following Trump’s endorsement, Blakeman said he was “grateful and blessed” to have the president’s support.

21 December 2025 at 06:15
20/12/2025 - 22:41

21 December 2025 at 06:15
20/12/2025 - 22:44

21 December 2025 at 06:15
20/12/2025 - 22:48

21 December 2025 at 06:15
20/12/2025 - 22:35

21 December 2025 at 06:15
20/12/2025 - 22:26

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

img

2022 年《中国劳动统计年鉴》数据显示,城乡居民基本养老保险领取人员(以农村老人为主)月均待遇仅 204.7 元;

img

img

img

img

img

img

21 December 2025 at 05:45
20/12/2025 - 22:25

21 December 2025 at 05:45
20/12/2025 - 22:20

Survivors 'nervous and sceptical' about release of remaining Epstein files

21 December 2025 at 04:33
Watch: Images, cassettes and high-profile figures - What's in the latest Epstein files?

The release of thousands of pages of documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's abuse has left some who were anxiously awaiting the files disappointed.

The documents' release was prompted by an act of Congress that directed the US Justice Department (DOJ) to make materials related to Epstein's crimes public. But some documents have numerous redactions, and others have not been shared publicly at all.

The lawmakers who pushed for these documents to see the light of day have said the release is incomplete and described the Justice Department's efforts as insincere.

Some legal experts also warned that the breadth of redaction may only fuel ongoing conspiracy theories.

But Deputy US Attorney Todd Blanche said on Friday - the day the materials were released - that the department identified more than 1,200 Epstein victims or their relatives, and withheld material that could identify them.

Among the latest released information is a photo of Epstein confidante Ghislane Maxwell outside Downing Street, a document that claims Epstein introduced a 14-year-old girl to US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, and multiple images of former President Bill Clinton.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein and has not been accused of any crimes by Epstein's victims. Clinton has never been accused of wrongdoing by survivors of Epstein's abuse, and has denied knowledge of his sex offending.

Other released photos show the interiors of Epstein's homes, his overseas travels, as well as celebrities, including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Peter Mandelson.

Being named or pictured in the files is not an indication of wrongdoing. Many of those identified in the files or in previous releases related to Epstein have denied any wrongdoing.

But many of the documents are also heavily redacted.

The Justice Department said it would comply with the congressional request to release documents, with some stipulations.

It redacted personally identifiable information about Epstein's victims, materials depicting child sexual abuse, materials depicting physical abuse, any records that "would jeopardize an active federal investigation" or any classified documents that must stay secret to protect "national defense or foreign policy".

In a post on X, the DOJ said it was "not redacting the names of any politicians", and added a quote they attributed to Blanche, saying: "The only redactions being applied to the documents are those required by law - full stop.

"Consistent with the statute and applicable laws, we are not redacting the names of individuals or politicians unless they are a victim."

John Day, a criminal defence attorney, told the BBC he was surprised by the amount of information that was redacted.

"This is just going to feed the fire if you are a conspiracy theorist," he said. "I don't think anyone anticipated there would be this many redactions. It certainly raises questions about how faithfully the DOJ is following the law."

Mr Day also noted that the justice department is required to provide a log of what was being redacted to Congress within 15 days of the files' release.

"Until you know what's being redacted you don't know what's being withheld," he said.

In a letter to the judges overseeing the Epstein and Maxwell cases, US attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton, said: "Victim privacy interests counsel in favour of redacting the faces of women in photographs with Epstein even where not all the women are known to be victims because it is not practicable for the department to identify every person in a photo."

Clayton added that "this approach to photographs could be viewed by some as an over-redaction" - but that "the department believes it should, in the compressed time frame, err on the side of redacting to protect victims."

Epstein survivor Liz Stein has called for all of the files to be released

Survivors of Epstein's abuses, are among those most frustrated by the release.

Epstein survivor Liz Stein told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that she thinks the Justice Department is "really brazenly going against the Epstein Files Transparency Act", which is the law that requires all the documents to be released.

Survivors are really worried about the possibility of a "slow roll-out of incomplete information without any context", she noted.

"We just want all of the evidence of these crimes out there."

Baroness Helena Kennedy, a human rights lawyer and Labour peer in the House of Lords in the UK, said she was told the redactions in the documents were there to protect the victims.

"Authorities always have a worry" about "exposing people to yet further denigration in the public mind", she told the BBC's Today programme.

Many Epstein survivors seem "very keen" to have the material exposed, she said, but added that they "might not be so keen if they knew exactly what was in there".

Democrat Congressman Ro Khanna, who led the charge along with Republican CongressmanThomas Massie to release the files, said the release was "incomplete" and added that he is looking at options like impeachment, contempt or referral to prosecution.

"Our law requires them to explain redactions," Khanna said. "There is not a single explanation."

Massie seconded Khanna's statement and posted on social media that Attorney General Pam Bondi and other justice department officials could be prosecuted by future justice departments for not complying with the document requirements.

He said the document release "grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law" of the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

After the release, the White House called the Trump Administration the most "transparent in history", adding that it has "done more for the victims than Democrats ever have".

Blanche was asked in an interview with ABC News whether all documents mentioning Trump in the so-called Epstein files will be released in the coming weeks.

"Assuming it's consistent with the law, yes," Blanche said. "So there's no effort to hold anything back because there's the name Donald J Trump or anybody else's name, Bill Clinton's name, Reid Hoffman's name.

"There's no effort to hold back or not hold back because of that."

"We're not redacting the names of famous men and women that are associated with Epstein," he added.

US seizes vessel off Venezuela's coast, officials say

The US has seized a vessel in international waters off the coast of Venezuela, US officials have told BBC News partner CBS.

It is the second time this month that the US has seized a ship off the country's coast.

The move comes after US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he was ordering a "blockade" of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

Venezuela has not yet responded to the latest US seizure, but has previously accused Washington of seeking to steal its oil resources.

The BBC has contacted the White House for comment.

The operation was led by the US Coast Guard, similar to the operation earlier this month, CBS reports. The ship was boarded by a specialised tactical team.

In recent weeks, the US has been building up its military presence in the Caribbean Sea and has carried out deadly strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug-smuggling boats, killing around 100 people.

The US has provided no public evidence that these vessels were carrying drugs, and the military has come under increasing scrutiny from Congress over the strikes.

The US has accused Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro of leading a designated-terrorist organisation called Cartel de los Soles, which he denies.

The Trump administration accuses him of and the group of using "stolen" oil to "finance themselves, Drug Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Murder, and Kidnapping".

Venezuela - which is home to the world's largest proven oil reserves - is highly dependent on revenues from its oil exports to finance its government spending.

Trump's announcement of a "blockade" came less than a week after the US seized an oil tanker believed to be part of the "ghost fleet" off the coast of Venezuela, which allegedly used various strategies to conceal its work.

The White House said the vessel in question, called the Skipper, had been involved in "illicit oil shipping" and would be taken to a US port.

Venezuela's government decried the move, with Maduro saying the US "kidnapped the crew" and "stole" the ship.

Engineer becomes first wheelchair user to go to space

Watch: Moment German engineer becomes world's first wheelchair user to go into space

An engineer from Germany has become the world's first wheelchair user to go into space.

Michaela Benthaus, who suffered a spinal cord injury in a mountain bike accident seven years ago, had reached out to a retired space engineer online to see if her dream of being an astronaut was still possible.

He then helped organise the historic 10-minute flight with Blue Origin, the space tourism company founded by Jeff Bezos.

Ms Benthaus and five others blasted off from Texas on Saturday and reached a point just above the so-called "boundary" of space, known as the Kármán line.

"It was the coolest experience!" she said after landing in a video shared by Blue Origin.

"I didn't only like the view and the micro-gravity, but I also liked going up. That was so cool, every stage of going up."

New Shepard, Blue Origin's reusable sub-orbital launch vehicle, took off from the company's Texas launch pad at 14:15 GMT.

Ms Benthaus, who works at the European Space Agency, said she had "really, really figured out how inaccessible our world still is" for people with disabilities following her accident.

She made her own way from her wheelchair into the capsule, using a bench extending from the hatch.

Hans Koenigsmann, the retired SpaceX manager who helped organise the trip, was strapped in nearby to offer assistance during the flight if needed.

"I met Hans the first time online," Ms Benthaus said. "I just asked him, like, you know, you worked for so long for SpaceX, do you think that people like me can be astronauts?"

Koenigsmann said Ms Benthaus "basically inspired me to do this. "It's her drive that kind of convinced me I should do that, too, and to just experience something that I've seen from the outside for a long time," he said.

Blue Origin said ground support equipment was added to help Ms Benthaus enter and exit the capsule.

"Michi's flight is particularly meaningful, demonstrating that space is for everyone, and we are proud to help her achieve this dream," Phil Joyce, senior vice-president of New Shepard, said.

The cost of the mission, which is the 16th suborbital space tourism launch carried out by Blue Origin, has not been revealed.

The company has taken dozens of tourists to space. In April, pop star Katy Perry, Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez and CBS presenter Gayle King were among six women blasted into space aboard a Blue Origin rocket for a flight that lasted about 11 minutes.

The high-profile flights come at a time when private space companies are fiercely competing for dominance in space tourism.

Engineer becomes first wheelchair user to go to space

21 December 2025 at 03:16
Watch: Moment German engineer becomes world's first wheelchair user to go into space

Thomas Skinner claims BBC rigged Strictly vote removing him

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Thomas Skinner has claimed the BBC rigged the vote that saw him leave the show.

The social media personality alleged in an online post that the night he left the competition he was sent an "anonymous email claiming to be from a BBC exec with stats" that showed he had "received far more votes than it appeared".

He went on to say the email also claimed the BBC was "angry" and "nervous" over his meeting the US Vice-President JD Vance.

It follows reports Skinner is suing the BBC over claims the vote was rigged against him. A BBC spokesperson rejected the allegation, saying Strictly's public vote was "independently overseen and verified to ensure complete accuracy".

They added: "Any claims to the contrary are entirely without foundation."

PromoVeritas, the company which verifies the show's public vote, said all the votes it receives are "validated" and "independently and comprehensively verified by two auditors".

It is understood the BBC is not aware of any legal complaint over the matter.

Skinner was the first celebrity contestant to be voted out in this year's series.

Ahead of Saturday's final - which sees former contestants return - he announced he would not be attending.

"I spoke with my lovely dance partner, Amy Dowden to make sure she was okay with me not attending," he wrote in a lengthy post on X, explaining his post was "so people know the truth" regarding his absence.

"I don't want people thinking I am bitter when I ain't."

Skinner claimed he had the authenticity of the alleged email from a BBC executive "independently verified", though it is unclear how he did so.

He said he had asked to see the official voting tallies "to back up the ones I was sent in the email but was told they couldn't be shown to me" and "have never been shown in the history of the show".

He added that there were "smaller things" that added to the feeling of "how unfair it all was", such as his welcome gift to the show being the only one that "got stolen apparently".

The BBC spokesperson said Skinner had yet to share the email with anyone from the broadcaster "despite requests for it", and so they were unable to comment.

They added that the Strictly team "categorically did not supply 'welcome gifts' to any of the cast".

Skinner first hit TV screens on The Apprentice in 2019, and has since appeared on shows including 8 Out of 10 Cats, Michael McIntyre's Big Show, Good Morning Britain and Celebrity Masterchef. He is also due to appear on Celebrity Apprentice this Christmas.

He is also known for his social media videos encouraging people to think positively, which typically end with a trademark "bosh".

But he has attracted criticism in recent months for meeting Donald Trump's vice-president over the summer and being pictured wearing a Make America Great Again cap.

Skinner stressed in his post that he was "not a political bloke", adding: "I just love my country and am patriotic."

He said he had a "private" Zoom call with BBC executives on Wednesday about "going forward" that had been leaked and was "national news" by the following morning.

Anthony Joshua got a huge pay day, but his victory over Jake Paul was slow and joyless

Highlights - Joshua stops Paul in Miami

  • Published

Such was the oddity of Anthony Joshua v Jake Paul even taking place, the fight landed on Netflix under a cloud of suspicion that boxing had surrendered itself to choreography.

To be clear, this was a sanctioned professional contest, not a scripted event - and the storyline it produced was mundane and predictably one-sided.

No scriptwriter would have come up with something like this.

The plot played out in the ring was lifeless - a slow, joyless watch that would have struggled to earn even a charitable rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

And the ultimate irony is that this spectacle has provided one of Joshua's biggest paydays and, in all likelihood, his largest television audience.

With seconds remaining in the fourth round, referee Christopher Young perhaps spoke for viewers around the world when he pulled the fighters together and urged them to engage.

Directing his comments at Paul, he said: "Fans didn't pay to see this crap."

"Amen," replied Netflix commentator Mauro Ranallo. "Christopher Young with the call of the night."

All week Joshua spoke about "carrying boxing on his back". On Friday night in Miami, he dumped the load, but only after an awkward and laboured process.

Paul was there to survive.

The man who spent fight week promising the greatest upset in sporting history instead avoided engagement.

He circled endlessly - making the most of the space afford by a ring two feet wider than normal - and attempted to run down the clock.

When he did make contact, it was with echoes of his schoolboy past as a wrestler, constantly going low and grabbing Joshua's leg.

There was an embarrassing lack of punches by Paul and a litany of wild swings from Joshua that even a novice like his opponent was able to easily evade.

"It's a win but it's not a success," Joshua said afterwards. "I've got a lot of improving I've got to do. I'm not happy."

Joshua earned his share of a reported £210m purse, but from a boxing perspective - and for those in the UK who stayed up into the early hours to watch - the contest was meaningless.

Is Joshua set for another gimmick fight?

Joshua stood in the ring and told the crowd he did not care about legacy. It was an honest line, and a fairly accurate one, because nothing that just happened was going to add to it.

The 36-year-old is a schooled heavyweight, an Olympic gold medallist and a former two-time world champion.

He has left a significant footprint on the sport and inspired a generation of fighters and fans.

But going six rounds before doing the inevitable against Paul - a 28-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer who had never faced anything close to elite level - will not enhance that legacy.

"I wish I could have knocked him out at the start," Joshua said. "But as we saw, Jake has spirit, he has some heart. He tried his best and I take my hat off to him."

The fight underlined how boxing's landscape is shifting, with Netflix-driven hype and commercial appeal increasingly trumping sporting logic.

It is the same thinking that has recently fuelled talk of Irish star Katie Taylor facing former UFC champion Ronda Rousey.

Joshua, for his part, is open to operating in that space.

Two of his past three fights have now come against boxing novices - first UFC fighter Francis Ngannou, and now Paul. His only other outing in that period ended in a heavy knockout defeat by a top-level heavyweight in Daniel Dubois.

The Dubois bout suggested Joshua is in decline, the toil of 33 professional fights after an amateur career eroding his powers.

Amid that backdrop, who can really blame him for taking the money and spotlight afforded at this stage in his career?

When promoter Eddie Hearn was asked about reports linking Joshua with a February bout against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, he did not rule it out.

"Rico or whoever it is, we haven't finalised that yet," Hearn said. "The date is what we're going to work out in the next four, five, six days. We're not going to rush him back if he's not quite ready. But we won't be long."

How will master promoter Paul shape the story?

Paul has spent years demanding to be recognised as a "real" boxer.

He has called out the likes of 35-year-old Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - who has held world titles at four weight categories from light middleweight to light heavyweight - while at the same time picking opponents ranging from retired MMA fighters and faded ex-champions to reality TV personalities and even a grandfather.

Somehow he talked his way into fighting an Olympic gold medallist and former heavyweight champion in Joshua, despite being a novice cruiserweight.

In fight week some observers claimed he was of a regional level standard as a fighter.

So how did this happen?

The Disney-actor-turned-YouTuber-turned-boxer has more than 55m followers across his social media platforms.

And that audience and interest level is money.

Paul is said by Forbes to be worth $50m (£37.5m).

He trains out of a £3m converted warehouse in Puerto Rico, a full-time base with recovery suites, a strength and conditioning centre and high-end equipment used by elite professionals.

Conditioning coach Larry Wade, who has worked with world champions such as Shawn Porter and Badou Jack, oversees his physical work.

Head trainer Theo Chambers, who learned his craft at Detroit's famed Kronk Gym, runs technical sessions alongside former world title challenger J'Leon Love.

Moments after his defeat, he told the world about his suspected broken jaw and spat out blood for dramatic effect.

He also spoke of his determination to be a world champion.

With his audience reach influence and his resources expect to see him back in a boxing ring again no matter how much of a farce this fight was at times.

Now is the time to make Joshua-Fury for 2026

The surreal nature of the event was underlined at the post-fight news conference when Joshua put on his best Tyson Fury voice after being asked if he'd like to fight his British rival next.

"I give the dosser eight weeks; 24 hours to sign a contract. Let's see if he is a man. Greedy belly!" he laughed, sounding more like a pirate than the Morecambe native, who has also been world heavyweight champion.

It was comical, sure, but it also summed up the strangeness of the whole night.

Joshua and Fury should have faced each other long ago. The fight is no longer what it once was, but it would still be enormous and would still sell out a stadium. The question, then, is why it should be delayed again.

When it was put to Joshua, he said he would be happy to fight Fury next. Hearn insisted it could happen.

Boxing, and Joshua, have been here before.

In 2023, he and Deontay Wilder appeared on the same bill in Riyadh with the clear intention of finally meeting. Joshua beat Otto Wallin. Wilder lost to Joseph Parker. The fight never materialised.

Delay, diversion and interim fights have a habit of killing boxing's biggest moments.

That is the risk now facing Joshua and Fury - especially in a sport increasingly distracted by spectacle.

Joshua-Paul will not be the last of its kind. And if boxing wants to change the direction of travel, it may be time to rewrite the script.

But in the face of competition from entertainment-based contests like this, and boxing's inability to put on the key fights people want to see – like Joshua v Fury in their prime – only time will tell if more repeats are served up rather than new blockbusters.

Daisy House died in hospital on Monday

The family of a 16-year-old have paid tribute to their "bright, beautiful" girl after she died following an incident on the London Underground.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers and paramedics were called to Loughton Underground station, Essex, with reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Daisy House died in hospital and her family said: "Our beautiful daughter Daisy lost her life. She was a bright, beautiful, clever, and funny girl who had just started sixth form and had her whole future ahead of her."

They also thanked the emergency services who tried to save her following the incident at about 14:30 GMT on Monday.

The statement continued: "We thank everyone who has sent best wishes, kind messages, and floral tributes.

"We would now ask for our privacy to be respected while we come to terms with the loss of our Daisy and what life will be like without our daughter."

I adopted a boy and then at Christmas, his baby sister too

Sarah is about to spend her third Christmas with her two adopted children

Anxious waits for arrivals are nothing new at Christmas as people track special deliveries.

But for one Shropshire woman, the package two years ago was more precious than something due in the post. It was the child she adopted - the sister of the boy she had made part of her family the year before.

"[We were] on tenterhooks as to whether she would be here for Christmas," remembered Sarah, 44.

She was not disappointed. In that December of 2023 she formally became a mum of two. Adopting siblings, she said, was "the best decision I ever made".

It was, then, the best of times and the busiest of times. Christmas, she recalled, "is carnage in the best possible way with small children".

And it was a journey to get there. It began when Sarah found out she would be unlikely to have a healthy pregnancy. Her story took a huge stride forward when she adopted her son in July 2022.

Sarah described how she had read the then 17-month-old's profile prior to adoption and "knew he was mine". She said she "got butterflies".

She then found out that her son's birth mother was pregnant, and decided to put herself forward as a potential parent for this new baby, should that be needed.

The girl, the half sister of Sarah's son, was born on Christmas Day 2022, and the family became a trio the following December.

They are about to celebrate their third Christmas together, but Sarah insists on trying to make "every day special".

She said: "If I see in a shop a toy or something that I think they'd like, I'll buy it, because it doesn't have to wait until one single day a year.

"Especially with adopted children, a lot of them have trauma in some way, shape or form.

"They can push you away because they feel unsafe. But if you can show them that you aren't going anywhere and you're there forever – if it means that once a month they get a treat – then so be it.

"And to be honest," she said, "as long as the children are happy and content and have got somewhere safe, especially at Christmas, that's what matters."
