Getty ImagesPolice have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect in a mass shooting at Brown University that killed two people and injured nine others, sources close to the investigation told the BBC's US partner, CBS News.
Authorities are now searching for the person and a car the suspect is believed to have rented, according to CBS. They have not publicly identified the suspect.
They also are looking into a possible link between the shooting at Brown and the killing of a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology two days later.
The search is now in its sixth day, with investigators knocking on doors, asking for home-security videos, and appealing to the public for tips to find the gunman.
A news conference that police in Providence, Rhode Island, had planned for Thursday afternoon was abruptly cancelled, but they said they expected to give an update later in the day.
On Thursday, authorities told CBS sources that they are investigating possible connections between the shooting and the killing of an Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) nuclear science and engineering professor two days later.
Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, 47, from Portugal, was shot "multiple times" on Monday at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, which is about 50 miles (80km) from Providence.
Police have obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect, sources told CBS. The sources said a rental car matching the same description was seen at both crime scenes.
Federal authorities had previously said there was no link between the two murders.
On Wednesday, authorities released a photo of an individual they believe was in close proximity to their primary person of interest.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said they wanted to speak with the person, "who may have information relevant to the investigation".
The chief also said the killer "could be anywhere", adding that "we don't know where the person is or who he is".
A day earlier, police had shown footage of a person of interest where a man was seen walking around the university campus with a black mask over his mouth, possibly "casing" the area before the crime, Perez said.
Members of the public have expressed frustration that the mass shooting investigation has appeared to yield little progress so far.
In response, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said he believed the killer would be caught "and it is just a matter of time before we catch him".
The FBI has offered a $50,000 (£37,350) reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the attack.
The shooting occurred at Brown University's Barus & Holley engineering building during final exams.
Authorities identified the two students killed as Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek-American freshman student.
CBSA former Nascar driver is believed to be among seven people who have died in a plane crash at a regional airport in North Carolina, an official says.
The Cessna C550 aircraft is owned by a private company associated with Greg Biffle, a retired Nascar driver, CBS, the BBC's US partner, reported.
The small aircraft crashed while landing at Statesville Regional Airport around 10:20 local time (15:20GMT), aviation officials investigating the incident told reporters.
Congressman Rich Hudson of North Carolina appeared to confirm Biffle's death on X, writing that he was devastated by the loss of the racer, his wife Christina and their children.
"Greg was a great NASCAR champion who thrilled millions of fans. But he was an extraordinary person as well, and will be remembered for his service to others as much as for his fearlessness on the track," Hudson wrote, praising their aid work during hurricanes in North Carolina and Jamaica.
Professional baseball player Mitchell Garret wrote on Facebook that Biffle and his family were on their way to spend the afternoon with him.
"Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," he wrote on Facebook. "We are devastated. I'm so sorry to share this."
Statesville Airport director John Ferguson described the aircraft as a corporate jet and said that it was already engulfed in flames when he arrived on the scene.
The business jet took off around 10:06 local time and was in the air briefly before the crash.
It crashed on the east end of the runway and authorities do not yet have information on the cause of the crash.
Statesville Airport will remain closed until further notice as crews clear debris off the runway, Mr Ferguson told reporters.
Officials did not provide any information about deaths or people aboard the aircraft during the media conference.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation, said it was launching a go team to investigate the fatal crash. The team expects to arrive on scene on Thursday night.
The Statesville Regional Airport (KSVH) is owned by the City of Statesville, which is about 45 minutes north of Charlotte.
It also provides aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several Nascar racing teams.

Known as The Biff, the Vancouver, Washington, native received national notice in 1995 when during that year's Nascar Winter Heat Series., according to his Nascar profile.
He quickly made a name for himself in the Craftsman Truck Series, winning the 1998 Rookie of Year award and the 2000 series championship.
He went on to be named 2001 Rookie of the Year in the Xfinity Series and to win the 2002 championship, becoming the first driver with championships in both the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series.
He also co-founded the organisation's Sand Outlaws Series. Although he scaled back on racing after 2016, he seemingly came out of retirement in 2019 for a one-off race at Texas Motor Speedway, which he won.
"Racing is racing," he told Nascar.com in 2021. "It's that adrenaline, you want to be better than the competition, you want to build a better piece and have a faster car. I just enjoy the competition."
House Oversight CommitteeThe House Oversight Committee has released a batch of around 70 photos from the estate of late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It's the third such release from a tranche of over 95,000 photos the committee has acquired from Epstein's estate. It includes images of quotes from the book Lolita written across a woman's body, and redacted images of women's foreign passports.
It comes hours before the 19 December deadline for the Department of Justice to release all files related to its investigation into Epstein.
"These new images raise more questions about what exactly the Department of Justice has in its possession," said ranking member of the committee, Robert Garcia.
Some of the photos released on Thursday show Epstein speaking with professor and activist Noam Chomsky aboard a private plane; Bill Gates standing beside a woman whose face is redacted; Steve Bannon sitting at a desk across from Epstein, and former Alphabet president Sergey Brin at a dinner event.
These are the latest wealthy, powerful men to be seen in Epstein estate photos released by the House Oversight Committee - previously released photos also show US President Donald Trump and former president Bill Clinton, as well as film director Woody Allen, former US treasury secretary Larry Summers, attorney Alan Dershowitz, Andrew Mountbatton-Windsor, and others.
Appearing in the photos is not evidence of any wrongdoing, and many of the pictured men have said they were never involved in Epstein's illegal activity.
House Oversight CommitteeIn a statement accompanying the photo release, Democrats on the US House Oversight Committee said the Epstein estate did not provide context or timings for the pictures.
"Photos were selected to provide the public with transparency into a representative sample of the photos received from the estate, and to provide insights into Epstein's network and his extremely disturbing activities," the statement says.
The release also includes several photos of quotes from the Vladimir Nabokov novel Lolita written in black ink across different parts of a woman's body, like her chest, foot, hipbone, and back. Lolita tells the story of a young girl who was groomed by a middle-aged literature professor.
One quote from the book written across a woman's chest reads, "Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth".
House Oversight CommitteeThere are also a number of photos of female passports and identification documents from countries around the world, including Lithuania, Russia, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine.
Most of the information on the documents, like names and birth dates, is redacted but the House Oversight Committee said in a press release that the passports belong to "women whom Jeffrey Epstein and his conspirators were engaging".
Another photo shows Epstein sitting at a desk closely surrounded by three female figures whose faces have been redacted - one has her hand on Epstein's chest under his shirt, and another is crouching to look at a nearby laptop. Epstein appears to be helping the third put on a bracelet.
House Oversight CommitteeAnother image released is a screenshot of text messages from an unknown person who says they have been sent "some girls" and are asking for "$1000 per girl".
House Oversight CommitteeThe committee has thousands of images in its possession from the Epstein estate, which are "both graphic and mundane", its statement on Thursday explained.
The House Oversight Committee first subpoenaed the estate of Epstein, who died in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on allegations of sex trafficking, in August.
The photos and files the Epstein estate gave to the committee are separate from what is largely referred to as "the Epstein files". Those are documents within the justice department's possession related to its own investigation into Epstein.
Under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which President Trump signed into law last month, the DOJ has until 19 December to release its files. The extent of what's contained in the DOJ's files is unknown, and it's likely that much of the content will be heavily redacted, similar to House Oversight Committee materials.
ReutersPope Leo has named Bishop Aldon Ronald Hicks as the next archbishop of New York.
Bishop Hicks, who - like the pope - is from the Chicago area and served in Latin America, will lead one of the Roman Catholic Church's most populous and important postings in the United States.
The 58-year-old replaces the retiring Cardinal Timothy Dolan, 75, who was seen as a conservative with close ties to President Donald Trump. Hicks said he accepted his appointment, which was announced on Thursday, with "an open heart" and Dolan called it "an early Christmas gift" for New Yorkers.
Last month, Hicks joined other bishops to condemn the Trump administration's large scale immigration-related arrests as part of its mass deportation agenda.
Hicks' early life and pastoral career closely mirror Pope Leo's. He grew up in South Holland, a short distance from Leo's Dolton neighbourhood in the suburb of Chicago.
While Pope Leo spent two decades as a missionary in Peru, Hicks worked at an orphanage in El Salvador from 2005 to 2010, according to a biography released by the New York archdiocese. Hicks was appointed bishop of Joliet by Pope Francis in 2020.
Like the pope, Hicks has been outspoken about his concerns for immigrants.
"Deeply rooted in our Gospel tradition of loving our neighbor, this letter affirms our solidarity with all our brothers and sisters as it expresses our concerns, opposition, and hopes with clarity and conviction," he said, in response to a joint-letter written by US bishops expressing concerns about the situation immigrants in the United States face.
"It is grounded in the Church's enduring commitment to the Catholic social teaching of human dignity and a call for meaningful immigration reform," he said
The Trump administration has carried out large scale immigration arrests in the Chicago area, leading to clashes between federal agents and residents protesting their presence.
The bishops' letter comes as churches grapple with how to respond to immigration activity that affects their members.
The majority of people at risk of deportation are Christians, with 61% of the at-risk group being Catholics, according to a report by the US Catholic Bishops Conference.
Hicks will now leave his position as bishop of Joliet for the ornate sanctuary at St Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan where he will lead 2.5 million Catholics in the nation's largest city.
His appointment comes a week after Cardinal Dolan, who has served in New York City for about 16 years, announced the archdiocese will set up a $300 million fund to settle claims of clergy sex abuse.
"As a church, we can never rest in our efforts to prevent abuse, to protect children and to care for survivors," the incoming archbishop said at a news conference. "While this work is challenging, it's difficult, it's painful, I hope it will continue to help in the areas of accountability, transparency and healing."

大家大概想不到，美国互联网的热点，现在不是 AI 网站，而是一种全新的网站，叫做"预测市场"（prediction market）。
这类网站像雨后春笋一样，每天都在冒出来。最有名的预测市场，目前是 PolyMarket。
预测市场的用途，就是预测各种各样的事情。以 PolyMarket 为例，首页顶部就是各种预测的分类。
热门事件、突发事件、最新预测、政治、体育......
只要是你能想到的事情，它都提供预测。
以上周末为例，首页热门预测如下（上图）。
- 《时代》杂志的年度人物是谁？
- 《时代》杂志年度人物名单会泄露吗？
- 美联储一月份的决定是什么？
- OpenAI 下一次的大模型发布是哪一天？
你随便选一个，点进去就能看到，各种情况的概率。
上图预测的是，2025年12月5日至12日期间，马斯克会发多少条推文。
可以看到，概率最高的情况是440条～450条，概率33%，概率最低的情况是400条～419条，概率1%。
正是因为对于几乎任何问题，它都有实时的详细预测，美国人现在已经不怎么看民调了，改成看这种预测网站了。因为民调的抽样方法和样本大小，总是有局限的，反而是预测网站更反映市场的真实看法。
你可能会问，这些预测结果怎么产生？如何确保准确？
答案很简单，结果来自于用户的下注。
你看好哪一种情况，就可以对它下注。看好的人多，这种情况对应的概率就会上升，反之下降。
实质上，它的每一个预测都是一支股票，股价就是它的概率，1%的概率就是股价0.01元，100%的概率就是股价1元。
举例来说，某种情况的当前概率是2%，那么相当于0.02元。你看好这种情况，假定就花了100元买入。
结果，正如你的预测，它变成了现实，概率上升为100%，价格就变成了1元，相比你的买入价，整整上涨了50倍。于是，你投入的100元就变成了5000元。
反之，你预测错了，这个结果没有实现，概率变为0%，也就是0元，你投入的100元将一分都收不回来。
最近，美国的一条热门新闻就是，一个男子在 PolyMarket 上，对一个2%的小概率事件投入3000美元。结果，预测准确，他收回了12.5万美元。
为了方便世界各地的人参与，也是为了保证匿名，这种预测网站都采用稳定币交易。
所以，它的本质就是一个巨大的彩票市场，允许用户买卖自己最感兴趣、最熟悉的事件，这是它快速流行起来的根本原因。参与的人多了以后，反过来提高了预测的准确性。
我觉得，它的前景不可限量，一定会火爆的井喷式发展，传统彩票可能会被它彻底淘汰。
它把任何不确定的事情，都变成了彩票，实时量化了每一种可能性的概率，并且提供了金钱翻倍的途径。这一方面很有参考价值，可以用来判断未来情况，另一方面也非常有娱乐性和刺激性。
上个月，谷歌发布了新一代图像编辑模型 Nano Banana Pro（其实就是 Gemini 3 Pro 的图像分支）。
有一个功能引起了轰动：无论多么枯燥的文字，都能变成有趣的图片，从"读文"变成"读图"。
我当时就想，国产模型一定会马上跟进。
果然，昨天打开秘塔 AI，就看到他们发了这个功能，完全对标 Nano Banana Pro 以及 NotebookLM，而且还加入了自己的特色----讲解。
你点击"上传文件"（上图），上传各种资料（可以上传多篇），它就会自动创建一个知识库，输出内容的 AI 总结。这时，还会显示一个"给我讲讲"按钮。

1、步行环游世界
上个世纪90年代的一天，一个英国青年在酒吧里随口说，他可以从南美洲最南端一路走到英国。他的朋友都不信。
他就跟朋友打赌，他能做到。1998年，他正式从智利最南端开始步行，那一年他29岁。
27年过去了，他已经56岁了，依然在路上。
好消息是，他已经接近行程的尾段，预计将于2026年9月到达终点英国。
下面就是他的路线图，从南美洲最南端到北美洲最北端，再到亚洲和欧洲，最后是英国。
整个行程中，他只能步行或者游泳，不能使用任何交通工具。最难的一段就是北美洲与俄罗斯之间的白令海峡，为了不坐船，他是在冬天从海冰上爬过去的。
这27年中，他也不是每天都在走，有时因为各种原因，会离开一段日子，然后再回来接着走。
他说，依靠个人的力量不可能完成这样的行程，留不开家人的支持、陌生人的友善，以及赞助商的帮助。
至于是什么力量支撑他坚持走了近30年？他说："你需要看看真实的世界，以及生活在其中的人们，这将是你所能接受的最好的教育之一。"

一位前戴森公司的工程师，为不发达地区发明了一种手摇洗衣机。

Claude Opus 4.5 真是完全不同于其他模型。还没用过的人根本无法想象未来两三年会发生什么，明年可能就是最终的转折点。
我不知道接下来该如何适应。当然，我可以整天看着 Opus 帮我工作，偶尔出点小问题再干预一下，但再过一段日子连这些都不需要了呢？
编码问题基本上已经解决了，接下来像系统设计、安全之类的问题也会迎刃而解。我估计再过两三个版本，80%的技术人员就基本没用了。当然，公司还需要一些时间来适应，但他们肯定会想方设法尽快摆脱我们。

2、为什么学习物理学

（4）物理教会人们如何认识事物，帮助你质疑很多事情。质疑和自由思想的价值，不仅对科学发展，而且对其他各个领域，都显而易见。

（5）在学习科学的过程中，你会学会如何试错，培养发明创造和自由探索的精神，这种精神的价值远远超出了科学本身。
人们会学会问自己："有没有更好的方法 ？"我们必须想出一些新的技巧或方法，以改进这项技术。这种想法是许多思想、发明创造以及各种人类进步的源泉。

台湾朝野对立升温，在野蓝白阵营预告，将在星期五（12月19日）召开记者会宣布，在立法院会提案弹劾总统赖清德。
台湾《联合报》引述消息人士报道，蓝白星期五开记者会宣布弹劾赖清德后，预计程序委员会下星期二（23日）正式提案，并列入下星期五（26日）院会议程，届时蓝白会提出弹劾案处理日程，并召开全院委员会、公听会等，预计将延长战线在一个月后送交院会表决。
另一方面，行政院长卓荣泰不副署立法院三读修正通过的财政收支划分法后，国民党与民众党立委星期四（18日）在立法院司法及法制委员会通过谴责赖清德与卓荣泰，并移请监察院弹劾卓荣泰。
副署权是指总统依法公布法律，发布命令，须经行政院长，或行政院长及有关部会首长之副署，否则无法生效。
要弹劾总统，需由立法院全体立委二分之一以上提议、全体立委三分之二以上决议，声请司法院大法官审理，若经宪法法庭判决成立时，被弹劾人应即解职；在宪法法庭中弹劾要成立须经大法官现有总额三分之二同意，且同意人数不得低于九人，但台湾目前大法官仅八人。
行政院长的弹劾权由监察院行使，须经监委二人以上提议、九人以上审查及决定成立后，即向惩戒法院提出。监察院星期四回应时说，公务人员部分皆依监察法规定办理，如收到陈情，皆依程序处理。
乌克兰官方公布，第一副外长基斯利察星期四（12月18日）在北京与中国外交部官员会面，讨论俄乌战争。
据路透社报道，乌克兰外交部公布，基斯利察（Sergiy Kyslytsya）与中国外交部部长助理刘彬讨论俄乌战争，以及国际社会为结束这场战争所做出的努力。
乌克兰外交部在声明中说：“双方讨论了双边议程上的热点问题，概述了进一步开展最高级别和高级别接触的计划，讨论了加强贸易和经济合作的方式，以及在国际组织内开展合作的问题。”
中国外交部在官网公布，两人在北京举行中乌外交部政治磋商，并说双方也就乌克兰危机交换意见。

欧洲该怎么办？
美国政府今年对医疗健康产品加征关税，以迫使工业企业扩大在美国本土的生产，并增加研发（R&D）投资；同时，美国政府还启动了对部分药品价格的重新谈判，力图压低价格。
另一方面，中国在过去十年中在积极政策的支持下稳步推进，如今在临床试验数量上已超过美国，并确立了其在创新药物领域的重要地位。

Pontia edusa, commonly known as the eastern Bath white, is a species of butterfly in the family Pieridae. It is found from the southwest of Europe (southern France, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia) up to central Europe, and in the Middle East in Iran and Iraq. It is a migrant that can also be encountered in Belgium, the Netherlands, northern Germany and Poland, in the Baltic states, and in southern Sweden and Norway. The species inhabits open grassy or flowery areas, in stony or rocky places and in roadsides, at altitudes up to 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) and occasionally higher. Pontia edusa is a small to medium-sized migrant butterfly, with a wingspan reaching about 45 millimetres (1.8 inches). The upperside of its wings is white, with black stains on the top of the forewing and hindwing, while the hindwing underside has greenish-grey spots. Pontia edusa is nearly identical to P. daplidice; it is generally only possible to distinguish the two through genital inspection or DNA analysis. 昨天，OpenAI 在 ChatGPT 正式上线「应用」商店功能，在 ChatGPT 网页端点击「应用」或访问 chatgpt.com/apps 即可进入新功能页面，应用分为「精选 / 生活方式 / 工作效率」三大类。
目前，已上架的应用包括 Adobe Photoshop、Apple Music、Canva、Figma、Booking.com 等，应用可为对话引入新的上下文，支持在聊天中完成订购、将大纲转为演示文稿、搜索酒店公寓等操作。
连接后，可在聊天界面中通过「@ 应用名」调用指定应用或点击对话框左侧的「加号」进行选择，ChatGPT 还会基于上下文与使用习惯自动推荐相关应用。
OpenAI 表示，开发者已可提交应用进行审核与发布，并提供最佳实践指南、开源示例应用、专门的 UI 库与处于测试阶段的 Apps SDK 等资源，深受用户欢迎的应用有望获得重点推荐或在对话中被主动推荐。
早期阶段，开发者可将 ChatGPT 应用与其网站或原生应用相连以完成实体商品交易，OpenAI 也在探索包括数字商品在内的更多变现方式，并将根据反馈持续迭代。
所有应用须遵守严格的安全与隐私规定：符合 OpenAI 使用政策、提供清晰隐私政策、仅请求实现功能所需的必要信息；用户可随时断开连接，断开后应用将立即失去访问权限。
与此前的「GPTs Store」不同，本次应用商店以更接近苹果 App Store 的形态将复杂能力封装为可点击、可订阅、可组合的「应用」，使看似普通的对话框成为总入口，并为其带来连接第三方应用的能力。

昨天，海南自由贸易港正式启动全岛封关运作，实施「一线放开、二线管住、岛内自由」政策：
据界面新闻报道，三亚海旅免税城等门店迎来购物热潮，苹果 iPhone 等热门数码商品因免税与消费券叠加出现显著降价。
其中，iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB 免税价为 9299 元，较电商平台便宜 700 元；2TB 顶配版本免税价 16859 元，叠加消费券后低至 15859 元，较官网省 2140 元。
免税城方面称，iPhone 17 Pro Max 1TB 和 2TB 版本目前无货，256GB 与 512GB 版本可正常购买。
同一门店其他机型价格也有下调：iPhone 17 Pro 256GB 免税价为 8299 元，叠加优惠后较电商平台省 1000 元；iPhone 17 256GB 差价约 420 元，幅度相对较小。
免税清单扩容同步落地，新增扫地机器人、微型无人机等品类，覆盖税目扩充至 6600 个、较此前近 3 倍。封关配套的便利措施包括「即购即提」不限机场提货、免税商品种类扩容与高单价商品的显著价格优势。
离岛免税规则明确：离岛旅客需凭离岛交通凭证及身份证购买，全年免税额度为 10 万元，超额需补税；岛内居民在有年度离岛记录情况下，可不限次购买 15 类「即购即提」商品，但单件单价需低于 2 万元。

今天，OpenAI 正式发布智能体编码模型 GPT‑5.2‑Codex，定位为「迄今最前沿的智能体编码模型」，面向复杂的软件工程与防御性网络安全场景。
该模型基于 GPT‑5.2 定向优化，具备更强的长程任务执行能力、代码重构与迁移性能、原生 Windows 环境适配，以及对截图、技术图表和用户界面的精准理解。

据澎湃新闻、财联社报道，OpenAI 正在与投资者就新一轮融资进行初步洽谈，融资规模最高或达 1000 亿美元，公司的估值目标约为 7500 亿美元。
消息称，这笔潜在融资将成为今年规模最大交易之一，若落地，OpenAI 的估值较今年 10 月约 5000 亿美元将跃升近 50%。

据 The Verge 报道，索尼互动娱乐与腾讯就《荒野起源》涉嫌抄袭《地平线》系列一案已达成保密和解。
当地时间 12 月 17 日提交的法院文件显示，索尼已撤回起诉，相关案件被法院驳回，原告不得就同一事由再次起诉。

据《商业内幕》报道，微软 AI 负责人 Mustafa Suleyman 在播客「Moonshots with Peter Diamandis」的最新一期中表示，未来 5 到 10 年内，想在前沿 AI 领域保持领先将需要「数千亿美元」级别的投入。

RALEIGH, N.C. — Four-term North Carolina Gov. Jim Hunt, a towering figure in North Carolina politics in the late 20th century who helped the Democratic Party focus nationally upon public education reform, died Thursday at the age of 88, his daughter Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt announced.
Hunt, whose career provided a prototype for the modern “education governor,” served an unprecedented 16 years as governor as the state received the rewards and stings of shifting from textiles and tobacco to a high-tech economy.
Rachel Hunt’s office said that her father died peacefully Thursday at his Wilson County home.
“He devoted his life to serving the people of North Carolina, guided by a belief that public service should expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and always put people first,” Rachel Hunt said in a news release that also referenced “my beloved daddy and hero.”
Considered a business-oriented progressive, Hunt was a giant in state government and influential in the national education reform movement of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He was first elected governor in 1976 and, after a constitutional change, became the first North Carolina governor elected to successive four-year terms.
Following an epic U.S. Senate campaign loss to Republican icon Jesse Helms in 1984, Hunt’s political career resumed eight years later with a third term at the Executive Mansion, followed by reelection in 1996.
Hunt remained active in Democratic politics after leaving office in 2001, particularly as he watched protégés such as former Gov. Roy Cooper and the late U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan achieve higher office. He campaigned for President Barack Obama in 2012 and Hillary Rodham Clinton and Cooper in 2016.
“I can think of no one who shaped North Carolina’s recent successes as much as Governor Jim Hunt,” current Democratic Gov. Josh Stein said Thursday. And Cooper called Hunt the “greatest Governor in North Carolina history.”
Even entering his 80s, Hunt urged Republicans in charge of the legislature to fund “big things” for public education, rather than pass more income tax cuts.
“I’m proud of what we’ve done together,” Hunt said in a May 2017 interview. “But I’m far from satisfied about where we are and determined to keep doing my little bit, I guess, to help us keep changing things and improving things in North Carolina. And I know you do it mainly through education.”
Hunt concentrated relentlessly on public schools, talking about the connection between education achievement and competing in the world economy. In the 1970s, while lieutenant governor, he worked with Republican Gov. Jim Holshouser to make North Carolina the first state with full-day kindergarten.
In the 1980s, he helped create the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and pressed for standardized testing for public school students nationwide so that states could compare themselves.
Returning as governor in the 1990s, he championed the Smart Start early childhood initiative, viewed as a national model to prepare children for school, and higher teacher pay. And after the end of his career in office, the Durham-based Hunt Institute trained up and coming political stars nationwide about public education policy.
“If there is one person that is responsible for remaking and reforming education in the nation, particularly in the Southeast and starting with North Carolina, it is Jim Hunt,” former Democratic Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes said in a 2009 interview. “We will feel the effect of Jim Hunt’s leadership for generations to come.”
Hunt was an unabashed lobbyist for his programs and initiatives, often making late-night phone calls to lawmakers to persuade them. If that failed, he would enlist key constituents in a legislator’s district to bombard with them calls all weekend.
“He really had a way of pushing you to do things you never thought you could do,” said Gary Pearce, a longtime Hunt staffer and later biographer. “He made you feel like that you were genuinely making the world a better place.”
James Baxter Hunt Jr. was born May 16, 1937, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He grew up on the family’s tobacco and dairy farm in Wilson County. After law school graduation, Hunt, his wife, Carolyn, and their young children lived in Nepal for two years while working for the Ford Foundation.
Hunt rose quickly in Democratic politics, serving as president of the state’s Young Democrats in 1968 and getting elected lieutenant governor four years later.
In a controversial move during his first term as governor, Hunt commuted the sentences of nine Black men and one white woman convicted of the 1971 firebombing of a Wilmington grocery store during days of violence that included the shooting of a Black teenager by police. Key witnesses in the case had recanted their testimony. Full pardons for the “Wilmington 10” didn’t come until 2012.
His second four-year term closed with his political battle with Helms, the conservative firebrand known as “Senator No” for his opposition to civil rights, gay rights, abortion and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Hunt lost as Helms’ campaign blistered him with ads portraying Hunt as a flip-flopper on the issues.
A defeated Hunt returned to practicing law but remained in public life. His comeback to state politics in the early 1990s helped delay a growing Republican tide in North Carolina politics.
Even GOP leaders begrudgingly were impressed with Hunt’s ability to tack with changing political winds. In the mid-1990s, he called a special legislative session to get tough on crime and proposed tax cuts larger than what Republicans initially offered.
Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, a former state House speaker in the 2010s, called Hunt on Thursday “one of the most consequential public servants in North Carolina’s history.”
Rachel Hunt served in the legislature and was elected lieutenant governor in 2024. Jim Hunt was on hand at the Legislative Building in early 2025 when she took as a duty of lieutenant governor the gavel as Senate president, following in her father’s footsteps 52 years later.
Memorial information for Hunt will be announced later.

Rory McIlroy crowned Sports Personality of the Year
Golfer Rory McIlroy has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 after clinching the career Grand Slam and playing a key role in Europe's Ryder Cup win.
The 36-year-old Northern Irishman achieved golfing immortality in April when he won the Masters at Augusta National to complete the set of all four major trophies.
He became just the sixth man - and first European - to achieve the Slam, joining Americans Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, and South Africa's Gary Player, in accomplishing the feat.
Having won the US Open, The Open and US PGA Championship by 2014, McIlroy had to wait another 11 years to make his "dreams come true".
He then played a key role in Europe's first Ryder Cup win in the United States since 2012, contributing three-and-a-half points to his team's triumph.
McIlroy also delighted his home crowd by winning the Irish Open for a second time, with further successes at the Players Championship and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, before topping off a stellar year with his seventh Race to Dubai title.
"Wow. First of all, I would like to congratulate all of the other finalists. I know how much hard work and dedication it takes, so it is a pleasure to just be in this room. I feel truly honoured to just be a part of it," McIlroy said after receiving the award.
"2025 has been the year I made my dreams come true. From Augusta to the Ryder Cup and everything in between. It's the year dreams are made of."
England rugby union player Ellie Kildunne came second, with Formula 1 driver Lando Norris in third.
England forward Chloe Kelly, Lionesses goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and darts player Luke Littler were also shortlisted for the award by a panel of experts, with the winner decided by a public vote.
McIlroy is just the third golfer to win Sports Personality, after Dai Rees in 1957 and Nick Faldo in 1989.
The Holywood-born McIlroy is the third Northern Irishman to win the award, following boxer Barry McGuigan in 1985 and jockey Sir AP McCoy in 2010.
"I have a lot of people to thank. Firstly, the public, my family, my mum and my dad. They sacrificed so much for me. I wouldn't be here without them, so thank you," McIlroy said.
"My wife Erica and my daughter Poppy, they are what holds me together. My rock. They couldn't be here tonight but I can't wait to get back tomorrow and celebrate this with them. I love you.
"And to the BBC for hosting these awards. It has always been something growing up that I watched on TV.
"It was always a big part of the run-up to Christmas, so I am very honoured to get my hands on this trophy.
"Hopefully I can challenge to get it again next year."

McIlroy's long wait to complete a career Grand Slam could not have concluded in a more dramatic fashion.
Having let a four-shot lead slip at the 2011 Masters, history threatened to repeat itself in April.
He held a two-shot lead going into the final round this time around, but memories of recent near-misses came flooding back when his advantage was wiped out on the first with a double bogey.
Three birdies in seven holes gave McIlroy a four-shot lead going into the back nine before he dropped four shots in as many holes from the 11th.
However, the drama was far from finished.
Having missed a putt in regulation to get his hands on the coveted green jacket, McIlroy was taken to a sudden-death play-off after his Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Rose birdied six of his final eight holes.
With the agony of past heartbreak flooding back, McIlroy held his nerve to birdie the first play-off hole and win his first Masters.
McIlroy let out a huge roar before collapsing to the ground and weeping tears of joy at the end of an extraordinary day of sporting theatre.
"A lot of pent-up emotion came out on the 18th green. A moment like that makes all the years and all the close calls worth it," said McIlroy.
At the Ryder Cup, McIlroy contributed three-and-a-half points from five matches as Europe won on American soil for the first time in 13 years.
The 36-year-old bore the brunt of verbal abuse from a hostile crowd throughout the event at Bethpage Black in New York - and hit out at "unacceptable and abusive behaviour" after his wife Erica was hit by a drink thrown by an American fan.
Having won six times in his eight Ryder Cup appearances, the world number two is being tipped to captain the side in the future.
"I would love to be the European team captain at some point," said McIlroy.
"But that will be when I'm not good enough to make the team, or I make way for the new generation to come along."
CBSA former Nascar driver is believed to be among seven people who have died in a plane crash at a regional airport in North Carolina, an official says.
The Cessna C550 aircraft is owned by a private company associated with Greg Biffle, a retired Nascar driver, CBS, the BBC's US partner, reported.
The small aircraft crashed while landing at Statesville Regional Airport around 10:20 local time (15:20GMT), aviation officials investigating the incident told reporters.
Congressman Rich Hudson of North Carolina appeared to confirm Biffle's death on X, writing that he was devastated by the loss of the racer, his wife Christina and their children.
"Greg was a great NASCAR champion who thrilled millions of fans. But he was an extraordinary person as well, and will be remembered for his service to others as much as for his fearlessness on the track," Hudson wrote, praising their aid work during hurricanes in North Carolina and Jamaica.
Professional baseball player Mitchell Garret wrote on Facebook that Biffle and his family were on their way to spend the afternoon with him.
"Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," he wrote on Facebook. "We are devastated. I'm so sorry to share this."
Statesville Airport director John Ferguson described the aircraft as a corporate jet and said that it was already engulfed in flames when he arrived on the scene.
The business jet took off around 10:06 local time and was in the air briefly before the crash.
It crashed on the east end of the runway and authorities do not yet have information on the cause of the crash.
Statesville Airport will remain closed until further notice as crews clear debris off the runway, Mr Ferguson told reporters.
Officials did not provide any information about deaths or people aboard the aircraft during the media conference.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation, said it was launching a go team to investigate the fatal crash. The team expects to arrive on scene on Thursday night.
The Statesville Regional Airport (KSVH) is owned by the City of Statesville, which is about 45 minutes north of Charlotte.
It also provides aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several Nascar racing teams.

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot by masked attackers while leaving a mosque in Dhaka last week and died of his injuries on Thursday while being treated in Singapore.
The shooting came a day after Bangladeshi authorities announced a date for the first elections since the uprising in 2024, which Hadi had been planning to contest as an independent candidate.
As news of his death emerged on Thursday, hundreds of his supporters gathered in a square in the capital city to protest.
Later on, demonstrators vandalised the offices of Bangladesh's Prothom Ali and Daily Star newspapers, with one building partly set on fire.
"Hundreds of people have gathered here and carried out the attack," a police officer told BBC Bangla.
Troops were deployed to the scene, while firefighters rescued journalists trapped inside the building.
Hadi, 32, was a senior leader of the student protest group Inqilab Mancha and an outspoken critic of neighbouring India - where Hasina remains in self-imposed exile.

"No form of violence intended to disrupt the election will be tolerated," Yunus said. "The incident is a worrying development for the country's political landscape."
Investigations are ongoing and several people have been detained in connection to the shooting.
Hasina fled to India on 5 August last year, following weeks of student-led protests, bringing an end to 15 years of increasingly authoritarian rule.
In November, she was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity after being found guilty of allowing lethal force to be used against protesters, 1,400 of whom died during the unrest.

历经近两年立法拉锯、跨越美国大选与总统交接后，《生物安全法案》（Biosecure Act）正式搭上2026财政年度《国防授权法》（NDAA）顺风车，距离成为法律仅剩最后一步，仅需要总统签名。
本周三美国参议院通过总额约9,010亿美元的国防法案，送交总统签署。作为国防法案中的一环，修订后的《生物安全法案》延续以国家安全为名，限制联邦政府与特定中国生技企业的往来，但在适用范围与执行机制上，与先前版本已有所调整。该法核心规定，行政部门不得向被认定为“生物科技关切企业”的公司采购设备或服务，并在特定情况与生效期限后，禁止涉及使用这类设备或服务的联邦合约。
新版法案不再直接点名中国企业，而是授权白宫管理及预算局（OMB）建立跨部会机制，负责公布并更新“生物科技关切企业”名单，同时援引五角大厦《1260H条款》中与中国军方有关联的企业清单，《生物安全法案》的相关限制亦适用于《1260H条款》所列的任何实体。日本《日经亚洲》报导，目前《1260H条款》名单中仅将华大基因集团列入黑名单。
此前曾是该法案重点目标之一的中国合约制药企业“药明康德”（WuXi AppTec）已被删除。这家合约研发生产机构曾是先前版本《生物安全法案》（BIOSCURE）中点名的五家中国生命科学公司之一。彭博社日前披露，国防部副部长在10月7日一封信中，告知参众两院军事委员会主席，包括百度、阿里巴巴、比亚迪和药明康德等公司，应被列在1260H条款内。尽管药明康德并未在《生物安全法案》中被明确提及，但这仍可能受到影响。
此外，根据法案要求，美国国防部的采购限制也将扩展到太阳能板、逆变器和一些关键矿产。五角大厦将必须逐步淘汰中国制造的电脑和印表机，并评估中国数据机和网路设备制造商TP-Link构成的威胁。
中国驻美大使馆则强烈反弹，发言人刘鹏宇批评法案“炒作‘中国威胁论’，滥用国家力量打压中国经济发展”，并强调“中方强烈不满并坚决反对”。
《生物安全法案》最初于2023年12月提出。由于部分议员的批评，该法案被排除在2025年一揽子计划之外。经过修订后，该框架重返国会。尽管最后通过的版本采取了较为宽松的框架，制药业仍对该法案的潜在影响保持警惕。
根据《制药技术》杂志数据，中国企业目前负责全球约20%的在研药物，反映出该国在制药产业中的强大影响力。根据该杂志母公司GlobalData的分析，美国与中国生物制药公司之间的授权交易在去年创下历史新高，较2020年大幅成长280%。
在特朗普的美国拒绝挺乌并明显向普京靠近后，支持乌克兰的使命就义不容辞地落到欧洲人头上。燃眉之急，向乌克兰提供金融支持，欧盟成员国领袖周四为此齐聚布鲁塞尔，欧盟委员会主席冯德莱恩表示，没有作出决定之前，谁也不要离开会议室。泽连斯基则恳请各位：从现在到年底必须作出决定，否则乌克兰面临“重大问题”。
到哪里去找钱，解冻俄罗斯巨额资产 ! 现在就需要27个成员国作出决定，动用这笔冻结在欧盟国家的巨额资产，从而以“赔偿贷款”的名义支持基辅继续抵抗侵略者，在抵抗中维持基本的生存。问题很严重，如果成员国出于这样那样的理由达不成协议，乌克兰将冒着明年第一季度“断粮”的巨大风险。
特朗普周四下午催促基辅“迅速行动”，与莫斯科就终结战争谈判，但是俄罗斯同意停战的首要条件是乌克兰“割土求和”，放弃整个顿巴斯乃至全部俄占地区。而特朗普的特派代表之前与克里姆林宫达成的28点“和平方案”几乎遵循普京的逻辑，以乌克兰放弃俄占领土为先决条件，这一方案之后虽经过欧洲和基辅修正，但“领土”问题远远没有得到解决。
乌克兰的代表周五与周六与美方将举行新一轮谈判，泽连斯基希望通过谈判，明确美方向乌克兰提供安全保障的细节，以保证俄罗斯不至于在停战后卷土重来。但是这一点也很不乐观，受邀参加布鲁塞尔峰会的泽连斯基周四对媒体表示，“我至今没有得到任何安全保障方面的承诺。”他的问题是：如果俄罗斯再次发起侵乌战争，美国准备怎么办？
不过，泽连斯基周四来到布鲁塞尔的首要目标是敦促欧洲领导人以最快的速度对使用冻结在欧洲的俄罗斯中央银行的资产作出决定。他表示动用俄罗斯资产是道德的、公正的、也是合法的。欧盟负责外交的卡拉斯女士回应说：“普京打赌我们会失败，我们绝不能让他得逞。”欧盟委员会主席冯德莱恩的态度也异常坚决：27国不达成协议，“就不离开会议室”。
27国的多数，在特朗普决定关闭美国援助闸门后，承诺在未来两年内为基辅提供大部分财政和军事支持。以“赔偿贷款”的形式支持乌克兰。德国总理默茨周四抵达布鲁塞尔时表示：“除了动用俄罗斯资产，我看不到更好的选择。”稍早些时候他警告说：“如果我们做不到这一点，欧盟的行动能力将在未来几年甚至更长时间内受到严重削弱。”
然而俄罗斯2110亿欧元冻结资产中最主要的部分存在比利时银行，比利时首相德韦弗直到峰会开幕前还没有打算开绿灯，尽管他对此持“开放立场”。 这位弗拉芒保守派领袖周四在比利时国会表示：谈判取得了一些进展，但比利时拒绝“独自承担”这项在欧洲前所未有的行动带来的风险。他称： “在跳伞前，我们需要一个降落伞。如果要求我们跳伞，我们大家一起跳，”德韦弗担心会遭受俄罗斯“永无休止”的报复，要求对本国利益提供强有力的保护。
一些欧洲谈判代表则表示，比利时的这一要求被其合作伙伴认为是不合理的，他们愿意为乌克兰的贷款提供担保，但不愿签署“空白支票”。当被问及比利时的担忧时，泽连斯基表示：“我们可能担心俄罗斯联邦会采取某些法律行动，但老实说，这并不像俄罗斯在你的边境上那样可怕。”
欧盟考虑动用俄罗斯资产为乌克兰贷款提供担保，国际法专家夏洛特·博西永(Charlotte Beaucillon) 认为，这是“前所未有的机制”，欧盟必须明确其法律边界，以避免未来出现偏差。这位法律专家指出：“该机制的微妙之处在于，俄罗斯资产并未被没收，而是作为欧盟向乌克兰贷款的担保，一旦战争结束，莫斯科向基辅支付赔偿金，乌克兰将偿还贷款。”她描述道，这是“对传统上在武装冲突结束后才出现的赔偿阶段的预判，该阶段将清点损失并结算账目”。
鉴于俄罗斯自2022年2月入侵乌克兰以来“严重违反”国际法，欧盟必须“非常明确地阐明其决定所依据的国际法律依据”以及该情况“完全属于例外”的性质。
