The White House was served a legal rebuke this week when federal grand jurors in Alexandria, Va., rejected the Justice Department’s push to indict Letitia James, the New York attorney general, on mortgage-related charges for the second time in a week.
A retired lawyer lost the money in a tech support scam, a type of online fraud that is surging. Citibank said it couldn’t recover the funds, which criminals wired from inside his account.
David Welles, 87, was ensnared in a tech support scam that allowed fraudsters to take over his personal devices with remote access software. They made a wire transfer of $85,000 from his bank account.
Letitia James, New York’s attorney general, and President Trump have clashed for years, in part because of the civil suit she brought against him, his company and his family members.
